Tongue tie in children and its management

Tongue tie also called as “ankyloglossi” is a term used for restricted tongue movements due to abnormal lingual frenum attachment. This abnormal attachment may be mild to severe based on the length and the thickness of the lingual frenum. This is a congenital anomaly of the oral cavity seen at the time of birth.


Child with tongue tie has difficulty in breast feeding or suckling. A part from this child also has difficulty in eating any solid, semisolid or liquid food items. Due to which tongue tie children are generally malnourished. In the later life there will be speech disturbance.


Management of tongue tie is, to approach the professional when the caretaker first observes the child with difficulty in eating. Frenectomy, a minor surgical procedure will be done to relieve the tongue tie. Earlier the age at which this procedure is carried out, better the performance of the child.
