Chromogenic stains on child teeth and its management

These are the extrinsic stains over the milk teeth which vary in colour from blackish brown to yellow. Such stains are commonly seen at the cervical or the gum portion of the teeth. They are also commonly seen on the facial or the lingual surfaces of the front teeth
These multicoloured stains over the tooth are caused due to colour producing bacteria called, chromogenic bacteria. Even though the exact cause for such stain is not known but it is assumed due to the interaction of iron from the food and the bacteria.

Proper tooth brushing is the way to prevent such stains over the teeth. If the stain has already occurred then consult your dentist and get the professional scaling where such stains are removed.

Most of the chromogenic stains do not persist after 9 years of age. This may be due to alteration in the oral flora of the child However; such stains should not be neglected as they act as nidus for plaque accumulation, gingivitis and caries formation. Further, such stains also aesthetically hamper the child’s appearance Hence, seeking the professional care at the time when such stains are noticed can help the child from prevention of tooth damage related to such stains
