Amoxicillin stains on child teeth and its management

Sometimes, we encounter with certain greenish brown colored stains on the incisal edges of the newly erupted teeth or already erupted milk teeth. Such stains are due to the prolonged use for liquid amoxicillin by the child. Liquid amoxicillin is prescribed for ear or any other systemic illness.
Even though, the reason for such tooth color change is not known, but it tends to diminish after the use of liquid amoxicillin. Theses stains are mainly extrinsic in nature.

This color may be due to the retention of the drug and the coloring agent used for the liquid drug in the pre-existing dental plaque.

If left untreated, such stain may promote the further accumulation of dental plaque and tooth damage. Hence, proper tooth brushing should be adopted where such extrinsic stain can be removed. If not removed, then visit your dentist where oral prophylaxis helps in its removal.
