Prevention is one of the age old
concepts and it is the ways to stop something adverse from happening. This concept
is also applicable in the prevention of dental diseases. Dental caries and
periodontal diseases are one of the most common oral health problems. Untreated
caries or periodontal diseases will eventually result in tooth loss.
To avoid
this untoward event, correct method of tooth brushing, flossing and regular
visit to the dentist can absolutely prevent caries and periodontal diseases. One
should never forget to clean their tongue as this will remove the microbial
layer/coat formed over the tongue thus adding freshness to the breathe. Individual
should choose a medium or soft bristled tooth brush and a fluoride containing
tooth paste. However, the technique of tooth brushing is more important than
the material chosen for brushing. All the surfaces of the tooth should be
cleaned with gentle force for not more than 1-2min. This should be followed by
flossing which helps to remove the pathogens or microorganism in between the
teeth area. Lastly, thorough mouth rinsing with tongue cleaning is the best way
of prevention of caries and gum diseases.
